''The rest, as they say, is history''

Super Mario Bros, the game that changed the industry

Sonic 1 the game made to kill Mario

Before we start...

For this match, we're basically only using Super Mario Bros and Sonic 1, and their respective manuals, that's it lmao. We will only be using later games for mild supporting material.

We'll also be allowing both access to their power ups to make things fair

Background

Mario

The mushroom kingdom was peaceful place, until one day it was invaded by a tribe known as the Koopa, turning multiple of their innocent mushroom people turned into stones, blocks and plants. And the only person who could free the people, princess toadstool, could undo the spell, had been captured by the Koopa's, the only person who could save them was the hero known as Mario! who set out to save the princess.

After trial, tribulation and a LOT of lives, Mario defeated the leader of the Koopa's, Bowser, saving the Princess, and the whole of the mushroom Kingdom... for the this game at least.

That's it, the OG SMB on the NES isn't much what you'd call of a detailed story.

 Sonic

The evil Dr Robotnik had snatched multiple innocent animals and stuffed them into robots! for seemingly no reason. So the cool bad attituded Sonic The Hedgehog stepped in to save the day! Making his way stopping all of Robotnik's attempts to stop him, and eventually defeating the doctor once and for all... for the this game at least.

That's it, the OG Sonic 1 on the Genesis isn't much what you'd call of a-

Experience and intelligence

Mario

Mario's experience and intelligence in the first game is kinda eh, he's a plumber so that should count for some level of intelligence.

he also prioritises jumping over bowser while avoiding attacks so... he has SOME skill I guess.

Sonic

Sonic has also got minimal showings of skills, but he has some skills, in bosses, he primarily focuses on dogging and landing a hit when he has an opening

for intelligence... uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Arsenal

Mario

Magic Mushroom

Mario can use this to grow taller in size and hit much harder, allowing him to take an extra hit, but he will loose the power up.

Fire Flower

Via collecting this, Mario gains the ability to shoot mini fire balls endlessly, capable of one shotting most enemies, although he will loose it if he is hit.

Starman

(Waiting in the sky-)

With this, Mario has a speed increase and becomes invulnerable, killing the enemies he touches, the effect lasts about 11 seconds

Sonic

Shield

Forms a shield around sonic, allows sonic to tank an extra hit

Super sneakers

Gives Sonic a temporary speed boost

Super ring

Gives sonic 10 rings

Invincibility

Makes Sonic completely invincible and damage anyone who hits him, this lasts for about 20 seconds

Abilities

Mario

Mild power nullification (Debatable, see before the verdict)

This is... a little hard to apply, but this manual sort of implies that the Goomba's can't jump when Mario is looking at them, but it's hard to interpret it that way

Sonic

Super Sonic Spin dash
Sonic couldn't actually spin dash, but when he gains enough speed, he can roll into a ball and zoom around, allowing him to destroy enemies in his path

Rings

Sonic has the power to use rings, which give him the ability to always tank a hit that would kill him normally, even if he only has one, and he can collects the ones he dropped.

Chaos Emeralds (Debatablesee before the verdict)

Back before sonic could go super sonic, he could still collect the chaos emeralds, which in the first game could bring life to multiple plants, but their capabilities where unknown.

Feats

Mario

Overall

- Defeated Bowser
- Saved the mushroom kingdom
- Became the most popular game of the time
- Game holds up pretty well ngl

Power/Durability

- Can one shot most enemies via jumping on them
- Can take down Bowser with multiple fireballs
- Can break a chain with an axe when beating bowser
- Destroys brick blocks (0.00026 tons of TNT)

Speed

- Can run several blocks in a second
- Doges bowser's fire attacks (77.788 m/s)
- dogged bullet bill, who could be as fast as bullets (debatable, see before the verdict)

Scaling

Koopa tribe

- Hammer bros can throw a lot of hammers
- Bowser can throw a lot of hammers in one go
- Bowser can tank lava
- Bullet Bill can generate lots of Kinetic Energy (4,672.46976 joules, possibly 0.007192 tones of tnt) (high end is debatable, see before the verdict)

Princess Toadstool

- Can dispel the magic bowser cast across the Mushroom Kingdom (inapplicable, see before the verdict)

Sonic

Overall

- Defeated Robotnik
- Saved the animals from the robots
- Collected the ***6*** Emeralds
- Game still holds up pretty well ngl

 Power/Durability

- Can casually destroy Badniks made of solid metal
- Can destroy Robotnik's egg mobile easily
- Can push big blocks (1.491 tons of mass per block)
- Destroys massive walls (0.01 tons of tnt) (see before the verdict)

Speed

- Can run on the celling without falling
- Able doge ranged blast attacks
- Can doge electricity (155.68 m/s, likely 0.252c)

Scaling

uhhhhhhhhhhhh

yeah outside of a couple KE showings that are really not worth bringing up, small bombs tanking and breaking a block that no one really scales to, sonic is the only character in the first game with actually impressive feats sorry :3

Weaknesses

Mario

Mario is impressive, even in this game alone, but he's far from perfect, he clear lacks formal combat experience, dudes a plumber, not a fighter, if he gets hit once, then he looses his fire flower or magic mushroom, which he needs in order to break those blocks, he's also... not that sane? the dude breaks the blocks of the levels with no issue, you know, the things the Toads have been turned into?

Sonic

Sonic isn't as unstoppable as he seems on paper, he's rather arrogant and impatient, hell he gets impatient after not moving for 5 seconds lmao. his shield only lasts one hit, and without rings he will be taken down, and like Mario he lacks much combat experience.

Before the Verdict...

Do either have cannon extra lives?

Ehhhhhh it's kinda up in the air.

You could make arguments, especially for sonic due to the checkpoints, but overall there really isn't anything suggesting their cannon or not just a game play mechanic, and both have 3 lives and ways to get lives back even if you do buy it, so it doesn't really matter.

Does either of them lifting up a bunch of Coins/rings scale them anywhere?

no lol

It's never called attention to as a strength feat for either, it's too inconsistent and clearly not intended as a feat for either, furthermore later Mario games present people carrying coins differently to just... collecting them, and the Sonic games treat it as a gag, and it wouldn't reach numbers that would change much.

Is Bullet Bill ACTUALLY as fast as a real bullet?

Name=/=speed... all the time anyway. Bullet Bill has never shown any actual evidence of being actually as fast as a 9mm, the manual even describes him as 'Chasing after Mario SLOWLY but steadily', idk about you, but the last thing I would describe a bullet as is 'slow'.

Wait Mario can stop people from JUMPING?

As mentioned earlier, the manual implies Goomba's and other enemies can't jump while Mario is looking at them, but we have no evidence this is full on power nullification, certain characters like Bowser can still jump even when Mario is looking at him, and plenty of other characters in later games can still jump despite Mario looking at them, so this is more than likely just a light gag at the game's limitations. And it might not even be power nullification in the first place, the Goomba's may just fear Mario.

It also implies from the statement that Mario's vision is limited to the screen scroll, which we know is false.

TOWN LEVEL SMB TOADSTOOL WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?!?

Ok I doubt anyone is going to try and argue this but, just in case... we have no reference for how she dis-spells the kingdom, she could have saves the Toads one at a time, and there's no evidence it scales to her physically (similar logic applies to the Koopa's turning all of the toads to blocks in the first place).

Addressing the vs battle wiki calc

Ok, so, some people may be questioning why we used the measurements from the vs battle wiki calc on the feat of sonic smashing through a wall, but not the destruction value? This is pretty simple to explain, they use shear strength, when they should be using tensile strength of fragmentation, as the destruction is pretty clearly fragmentation, which is about 8 j/cc, down grading it to 43 mega joules or 0.01 tons of tnt, still small building level, just lower in the tier. The OG calc could be used as a high end though.

Can sonic use the chaos emeralds?

Not really no

Sonic very explicitly doesn’t understand the chaos emeralds, and his power is no way effected, even when he has all 6, plus the ending with all the chaos emeralds implies Sonic didn’t even intend to use them in the first place.

Verdict

Stats

This is pretty straightforward, at the time of these two games, they didn't have much strength wise, Mario can match the KE of Bullet Bill requiring 4.8 kilojoules, and smash a block at 0.000024 tones of tnt, not bad, but Sonic can smash through a massive wall requiring 0.01 tons of tnt, that's over 40x the power. And remember Mario requires the Magic Mushroom to do this, meaning once he gets hit, he's even weaker. Even with Bowser surviving in lava and the hammer bros throwing hammers it doesn't match this, even if it did, Bowser is way stronger and tougher than Mario since it takes multiple fire balls to take him down. Now to be fair Mario's debatable end is only about 0.007 tons of tnt, which he can perform in base if you buy it, thus likely surpassing sonic, but not only can Sonic have his own KE calc via his own speed, which could surpass it, that speed nullifies any edge Mario would have in strength, and since Mario needs his Magic Mushroom to surpass Sonic, one major hit and Mario looses that power up, since people weaker than Mario can still remove the power up. Speaking of speed...

Speed shouldn't be a surprise, even taking the low end of Sonic's electricity doge to 155.68 m/s, that's around twice as fast as Mario dogging Bowser's fire at around 77.788 m/s, even if you buy Mario dogging Bullet Bill being actually bullet speed, Sonic blows that out of the water with the high end of the electricity dogging being 0.252c, that is hundreds of thousands of times faster.

Mario could take strength and durability with a lot of leeway, but Sonic takes speed no matter what and with the most logical estimates, the stat trinity.

Arsenal/Abilities

Nowadays Mario easily has the power ups edge in the bag, but back then? He was rather limited, but he wasn't bad either, the fire flower is definitely a slick power up, giving him better range, and the Magic Mushroom would allow him to tank an extra hit, but Sonic's shield also does the former without loosing power, and his power sneakers would allow him to doge attacks easier via increasing his speed. Furthermore there's their Invincibility power ups, Sonic's lasts for nearly twice the time, meaning he could capitalise on it easier

And then there's Sonic's most surprising advantage, the rings, they ensure he'll always take a hit even if its fatal (he's stronger too so it's not a NLF), and he can always collect the ones he's dropped, while Mario needs to find another mushroom to take another hit.

Even if you do buy Mario's ability to prevent jumping, it doesn't stop sonic from using the Super Sonic Spin Dash

All in all its close, but Sonic's power ups and rings lead to more advantages.

Tertiary factors

This is close, but overall, Sonic's bosses generally require more strategy, Bowser simply needs to be jumped over, while Sonic requires a lot more dogging and timing, especially since Sonic is the more agile and doge heavy of the two. Mario is probably more intelligent via being a plumber while Sonic has... nothing lol.

overall Mario gets intelligence, while Sonic takes skill and battle iq.

Conclusion

Mario

Advantages

+ Possibly stronger and more durable with certain ends...
+ More intelligent
+ Fire flower granted more range
+ Could possibly prevent Sonic from jumping...

Disadvantages

- ...but weaker on the reasonable ones
- Slower no matter what
- Less reliable power ups
- ...but it doesn't stop the Super Sonic Spin Dash
- Slightly less skilled

Sonic

Advantages

+ Faster no matter what
+ Stronger and moe durable with reasonable ends...
+ More reliable power ups
+ Rings ensure he can tank any major hit Mario got
+ Slightly more battle iq and skill

Disadvantages

- ...but weaker with certain ends
- Less intelligent
- Less range

Overall this match was a bit more interesting then expected, but Mario just didn't have the stats, power ups, or skill to quite keep up, looks like Sonic was too atomic for Mario (don't get the joke? Read the manual for sonic 1)

The winner, is Sonic 1

Team Mario: None (Sorry Mario, your W is in another castle)

Team Sonic: 1 (SPRITE)
